‘Into
the Woods it’s time to go…’
In October 2004, a medley of music, mystery
and magic beans is coming to Broadlands School. The members of Keynsham
Youth Theatre, having broken box office records with their last
two shows, are facing their biggest challenge yet… Into the
Woods.
The show has become widely known as one of Stephen Sondheim’s
most popular works, and originally ran on Broadway for 764 performances.
An ambivalent Cinderella, a bloodthirsty
Little Red Riding Hood and a Prince Charming with a roving eye are
just some of the curious characters in James Lapine and Sondheim’s
‘fractured fairytale’.
When a Baker and his Wife learn that the
Witch next door has cursed them with childlessness, they embark
on a quest for the special objects required to break the spell,
by lying to and stealing from Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood,
Rapunzel and Jack (from Jack and the Beanstalk). Everyone's wish
is granted at the end of Act One, but the consequences of their
actions return to haunt them later, with disastrous results. What
begins as a lively irreverent fantasy becomes a moving lesson about
community responsibility and the stories we tell our children, accompanied
by a spellbinding score.
Into the Woods is widely regarded as Stephen
Sondheim’s masterpiece, full of intricate melodies and clever
wordplay, and as such is one of the most challenging pieces in the
amateur theatre repertoire. The last professional production in
2002 won the Tony Award (Broadway’s equivalent of the Oscars)
for Best Musical Revival. The original production in 1987 won Tony’s
for Best Actress, Best Book for James Lapine’s wonderfully
intricate modern take on classic fairytale characters, and Best
Score for Stephen Sondheim, and starred Bernadette Peters as the
manipulative and pivotal Witch.
Graeme Savage returns as director for KYT’s,
assisted by Mike Fernott, Hannah Totterdell and Jason Lemoir. Sarah
Savage continues as choreographer, and will be hoping to follow
the challenging dance sequences of West Side Story with some equally
impressive chorus numbers.
“Chris Tong as silent movie star Don
Lockwood, and Faye Elvin, as the love interest, lead a lively cast
in the story of romance on and off the silver screen… the
result is a splash hit” – Evening Post Review for Singin’
in the Rain, Oct 2003
